Memorial Day. To many I think this day is the signifier that Summer has begun and a good reason for shopping excursions as sales are prevalent this time of year. Memorial Day is in fact the day we as American’s pay homage to the men and woman who have served our country in the armed forces. To families that currently have loved ones on active duty this day of remembrance may be difficult as such a focus is pointed at those brave souls that lost their lives in protecting our freedom. I don’t have immediate family in the military. A Great Uncle served and came home from Korea but that is the extent of the military service my family has participated in. I am however grateful for what they have given our country and what peace they have helped bring to warring nations all over the world. My friend and I went to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and even in this virtual space it is staggering to look upon the names, to hear them being spoken aloud while Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower” plays in the background. I am humbled and thankful and now have a truer sense of what this day actually means.
